How to Make the Best Traditional Indian Desserts

Here is a detailed guide on how to make some of the best traditional Indian desserts at home.

1. Gulab Jamun

Gulab Jamun are soft, round sweets made from milk solids and soaked in sugar syrup.

Ingredients:
- 1 cup milk powder
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- 2 tablespoons ghee
- ½ cup milk (as needed)
- Oil for frying
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- Cardamom pods (crushed)

Instructions:
1. In a bowl, mix milk powder, all-purpose flour, and baking soda.
2. Add ghee and gradually mix in milk to form a soft dough.
3. Divide the dough into small balls.
4. Heat oil in a pan and fry the balls until golden brown.
5. In another pan, dissolve sugar in water and add crushed cardamom to make syrup.
6. Soak the fried balls in the warm syrup for at least 30 minutes before serving.

2. Jalebi

Jalebi is a popular Indian sweet known for its spiral shape and crispy texture.

Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons yogurt
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- Water (to make a batter)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water (for syrup)
- Saffron strands (optional)
- Oil for frying

Instructions:
1. In a bowl, mix all-purpose flour, yogurt, and baking powder. Add water to form a smooth batter.
2. Let the batter ferment for 3-4 hours.
3. In a pan, heat oil and prepare a sugar syrup by dissolving sugar in water, adding saffron if desired.
4. Fill a piping bag with the batter and squeeze it into hot oil in a spiral shape. Fry until golden brown.
5. Remove and dip in warm syrup for a quick soak before serving.

3. Kheer (Rice Pudding)

Kheer is a creamy rice pudding flavored with cardamom and garnished with nuts.

Ingredients:
- ½ cup basmati rice
- 4 cups milk
- 1 cup sugar
- ¼ teaspoon cardamom powder
- Chopped nuts (almonds, cashews)
- Raisins

Instructions:
1. Wash and soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes.
2. In a pan, bring the milk to a boil and add the soaked rice.
3. Cook on low heat until the rice is soft. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
4. Add sugar and cardamom powder, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
5. Garnish with chopped nuts and raisins before serving. Enjoy it warm or chilled.

4. Barfi

Barfi is a delicious fudge-like sweet made with milk, sugar, and various flavors.

Ingredients:
- 2 cups milk powder
- 1 cup condensed milk
- ½ cup ghee
- ½ cup chopped nuts (pistachios, cashews)
- ¼ teaspoon cardamom powder
- Silver leaf (optional for decoration)

Instructions:
1. Heat ghee in a pan and add milk powder, stirring continuously.
2. Add condensed milk and mix until it turns into a thick dough.
3. Stir in cardamom powder and chopped nuts.
4. Grease a plate and spread the mixture evenly.
5. Allow it to cool and cut
